The LeFever & Ellis Mule Ear Over/Under Combination Gun is a rare and ingenious example of mid-19th-century firearms craftsmanship, blending the versatility of a rifle and shotgun into a single firearm. Manufactured between 1861 and 1867 in Canandaigua, New York, this black powder muzzleloader was designed for both precision shooting and hunting, making it a valuable tool for frontiersmen and sportsmen alike.

Distinguished by its over/under barrel configuration, this combination gun features a .290 caliber rifled barrel stacked above a .720 bore smoothbore barrel, allowing the shooter to seamlessly switch between long-range accuracy and close-range firepower. The percussion mule ear hammers, which are checkered for ease of use, operate independently and can be cocked separately. Unlike standard double-barrel firearms, this model employs a single trigger, simplifying operation while maintaining versatility.

Bearing the barrel inscription "LEFEVER & ELLIS. CANANDAIGUA.", this firearm stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of LeFever & Ellis during their brief yet influential partnership. A relic of mid-19th-century American ingenuity, this combination gun remains a prized collector’s piece, embodying the practicality and adaptability of frontier-era firearms.
