about this artwork

This illustration depicts the Canadian Red Trout (Salvelinus marstoni) in precise lateral profile — the standard orientation of serious ichthyological documentation. The coloration is true to the species: an olive back giving way to brilliant red-orange flanks and belly, dusted with pale pink spots, with white-edged lower fins. The fins and body are rendered with the careful attention to anatomical accuracy that defines the best natural history illustration of the period.

The print originates from a late 19th to early 20th century American fisheries publication — the kind produced in the decades following the founding of the U.S. Fish Commission, when documenting North America's freshwater species was both a scientific priority and a matter of national interest. These plates were made to inform, and that utilitarian seriousness is exactly what gives them their lasting visual appeal.

A landlocked Arctic char of the cold lakes of the Northeast and eastern Canada, the Canadian red — or Quebec red — trout is a close cousin of the Sunapee and blueback chars. The print works well in fishing cabins, studies, and lakehouse interiors, and pairs naturally with other Northeast & Adirondacks freshwater species in a gallery wall arrangement.
