about this artwork

This plate depicts a Sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus), rendered in careful lateral profile against a loose watercolor wash of pale blue-green open water. The illustration captures the species with the observational precision that defined American natural history publishing of the late 19th century — the bold vertical barring along the flanks, the steeply arched forehead, the spined dorsal fin, and the blunt, incisor-like teeth that give the fish its common name are all faithfully recorded.

Produced by Armstrong & Co. at The Riverside Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this chromolithograph belongs to a series documenting Gulf and Atlantic coast sport and food fish with both scientific rigor and a practiced artistic hand. The soft, painterly background and clean linework are hallmarks of the period's finest natural history printing. The scientific name appears in italic beneath the common name, consistent with the taxonomic conventions of the source publication.

The palette — cool grey, slate blue, warm cream, and deep charcoal banding — translates naturally into coastal, naturalist, or study interiors. This print is available individually or as part of a curated set alongside Red Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, Pompano, and others from the same series.
