about this artwork

This plate depicts a Sailfish (Istiophorus albicans), rendered in precise lateral profile against a loosely painted watercolor ground of pale blue-grey. The specimen — noted as a 41 lb. catch taken off Port Aransas in the Gulf of Mexico — is illustrated with the elongated bill, dramatically raised dorsal sail, and deeply forked lunate tail that make this species immediately recognizable. The sail is rendered with particular care: deep cobalt and blue-black with finely spotted detailing along the membrane, darkening toward the upper edge. The flanks transition from a silvered blue-grey along the dorsal surface to a pale cream belly, with the pectoral and ventral fins shown in characteristic dark contrast below.

Published by Armstrong & Co. at The Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, this plate belongs to a distinguished body of American ichthyological illustration that paired scientific rigor with a practiced chromolithographic hand. The soft, washy background and clean linework are hallmarks of the finest natural history printing of the period.

This print is part of a broader series documenting Gulf of Mexico sport and food fish, including Tarpon, Cobia, Red Snapper, and others — all available individually or as curated sets.
