about this artwork

This chromolithograph of the Northern Kingfish (Menticirrhus nebulosus) comes from a late 19th-century publication printed by Armstrong & Co. at The Riverside Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts — one of the most respected fine-art printing houses of the era. The specimen depicted was a 1 lb. fish caught at North Long Branch, New Jersey, and the illustration captures the species with the careful, observational accuracy that defined American natural history illustration of the period.

The fish is rendered in profile against a muted sage-green water background, with the characteristic oblique banding, dusky dorsal fin, and warm amber tail rendered in precise detail. The scientific name appears in italic beneath the common name, consistent with the taxonomic rigor of the source publication.

The palette — olive, bronze, slate blue, and warm gold — translates naturally into interior spaces that favor earthy, coastal, or naturalist aesthetics.
